Don 2 review

If you are unaware of the latest news make sure you go through Breaking News and Hot News.

The Don franchise is back in most its stammering, self-praising and lopsided grinning glory. Living as much as its prequel, this one is high on slick quotient and it has many meticulously choreographed stunts. The only real grouse: Don has become cockier than ever and loves rambling lines that narrate his characteristic traits in third person- 'Don ke dushmano ko…' Yawn.

We start having a voiceover by the man himself who is the A-PAC head of drug retailing and wholesaling and wishes to spread his distribution channels across Europe. In doing so, he needs to help his old enemy, Vardhaan (Boman Irani) avoid a prison in Kuala Lumpur. So Don stages their own arrest by surrendering in the KL Interpol office towards the delightfully dumb investigators Roma (Priyanka Chopra) and her boss Malik (Om Puri). Soon, Don and Vardhaan have forgotten the incidents that took place the prequel and are plotting a significant heist in icy Berlin.

And before you decide to believe that Don has outdone everyone, the Interpol in Germany informs the Kuala Lumpur office that Don and Vardhaan happen to be spotted in Zurich. And though no visible spots are noticed on either from the gangsters, Roma and Malik are in their woolies trotting about in Berlin in the next scene. No global gangster movie is done with no car chase, a unique disguise (a Hrithik Roshan mask!) and some explosions here and there; to ensure that is what follows.

There are lots of mysteries in 'Don 2' that could make you stumped beyond reason. Like, why does a mastermind evil genius who is wanted across the globe personally get his drug consignments? Lack of trust in his aides or is he only a humble man of the soil? Also, when Don walks out of a hostage situation carrying a wounded Roma in his arms, Roma's boss casually enquires, "Kya hua Roma ko?" What does he expect to have an answer? Upset stomach?

While SRK's looks offer prominent signs of ageing, his acting prowess seems to be carrying out a Benjamin Button. Unless of course, cackling about one's might and monstrosity is Bollywood's formula for a super villain. Boman Irani is renowned for his razor sharp expressions but this is a first where he appears to be a bit lost about when to discrete which. Priyanka Chopra is barely there and quite consequently as she doesn't really foil Don's plans or do anything whatsoever that will result in the audience excited or anxious. Lara Dutta is perfectly sassy in all her cereal goodness and manages her part with practiced ease and confidence.

For a movie that rocks in grandeur and elegance, Don 2 has the logical reasoning of the 'Golmaal 5'. There's a part in the movie where Don actually convinces the German intelligence and the Interpol that he's working for them and they buy it. The verdict: The Badshah of bragging and also the king of the hamming is identical person and he's available in multiplexes waiting to con you off your money. The only way to outfox him, wait for satellite release.

Anna fast in Mumbai faces new venue problems

Mumbai: Anna Hazare and his team of activists can't find a suitable venue for his or her protest in Mumbai, which starts on December 27. Their first choice - the city's MMRDA Ground - costs 3.77 lakhs each day. Team Anna says it will not pay these "five-star" rates, even if supporters donate generously for their cause. So they took the Maharashtra government to the court, demanding discounted rates. A verdict is anticipated later today, but the court's observations so far seem to suggest bad news for Team Anna.

Anna will start his hunger strike against what he describes like a weak Lokpal Bill on December 27, the day when parliament will debate the balance. "The bill is being debated in parliament...a parallel discussion of the bill can't be justified," said the court.

Anna's group states that they have the right to peaceful protest. And also the 74-year-old Gandhian said, unperturbed, "I will fast in jail. There is lots of space there." He also known his epic fast in August in Delhi, when he needed to fight the government to hold his massive sit-in at Ramlila Maidan. In a massive miscalculation, the federal government had arrested him. As he left of jail, thousands attended his camp.

Anna decided to hold his fast in Mumbai this month because of the biting cold in the capital. Being an option to the MMRDA Ground, Anna's team may use Azad Maidan - the venue made available through the government for protests. But the demarcated space for public protests can accommodate 3000 people. Anna and the Mumbai police expect a daily turnout of 30,000. A huge section of Azad Maidan lies with the Sports Department whose officials have rejected Anna's request to make use of this space for his hunger strike.

The Sports Department states that a legal court has not allowed the part it controls to become provided for public protests. Officials also say that their section includes 22 cricket pitches, which tournaments are scheduled for the end of the season.

Law enforcement has warned the state government that with no additional space at Azad Maidan, the crowds will spill onto the roads, causing a complete shut-down of South Mumbai on work days. The police has also pointed out that because of the ground's proximity to important offices and buildings such as the municipal corporation, it's important that roads be keep free of traffic jams and enormous groups of people.

Anna Hazare's anti-corruption movement that saw Indians rally in support continues to be named one of the top ten news stories on the planet this year by Time magazine, which listed the Arab Spring and killing of Osama bin Laden as the top attention-grabbing headlines.

In the section on People Who Mattered, Time Magazine says "It's tough to picture this diminutive, celibate octogenarian being the dynamo behind a whole popular movement. However in India, Anna Hazare cut a Gandhian pose that transfixed the world's largest democracy and set its sitting government's feet towards the fire."

It is going on to say, "Hazare's repeated fasts against corruption attracted thousands of supporters and paralyzed India's Parliament. While critics spy corruption within his own ranks and point to Hazare's ties towards the Hindu right wing, his protest channeled the widespread exasperation and anger of India's rising middle-class, frustrated using the age-old habits of graft that still dominate much of India's calcified bureaucracy."

The magazine says - Mr Hazare, a former military man who spent a lot of his life helping govern his tiny village in western India, summed up his 2011 in a recent interview as time passes: "I am still bemused regarding how this all came about. A pauper residing in a temple, who has nothing, no power, no wealth; for him the whole country united and spoke in one voice."

Anna also causes it to be to Peter Hapak's Photo Essay on the Cover Story. Among the 36 pictures is a close-up profile of the smiling and Gandhi-cap wearing Anna Hazare and one in which he is sitting cross-legged. Its caption reads "anti-corruption crusader in India."

Anna says no separate Citizen's Charter, seeks Mamata's help

If you are unaware of the latest news make sure you go through Breaking News and Hot News.

"Citizens' Charter should not be brought being a separate law. Seeing that Parliament has made its decision why must a second thought be provided with. This is simply not right," he told reporters.

His comments came as Team Anna's Core Committee met here to chalk out its future plans, like the proposed Ramlila Maidan agitation, in case a strong Lokpal Bill is not passed within the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

Hazare chaired the meeting that's expected to please take a final ask his decision to go on an imprecise fast from December 27.

"Yesterday there is a Cabinet meeting to go over Lokpal. Through the meeting the Cabinet discussed making Citizens' Charter a different law i think is completely wrong," he said in front of the meeting.

"It is wrong because once i was fasting at Ramlila Ground, the top Minister wrote directions asking me to finish the fast assuring how the three crucial points -- inclusion of Citizens' Charter, lower bureaucracy and state Lokayuktas -- will be part of the Bill and Parliament consented to it," he stated.

Hazare said the decision to produce a separate law wasn't soon after Parliament taking a decision for the issue. "This means Parliament wasn't trusted. It had been Parliament that voted for the resolution and they say Anna doesn't have trust in Parliament. It really is they who don't trust Parliament."

Hazare requested "behen" (sister) Mamata Banerjee to "put a fantastic word forward" for Lokpal to ensure that corruption is eradicated at some level as her decision on FDI protected many small traders.

"She (Mamata) has done an awesome part of case of FDI for the country. Her decision protected many small traders. Our request is the country which is facing such huge threat of corruption should get Lokpal that will eradicate 60-70 % in the menace or else 100 per cent.

"Our request to 'behen' Mamata is you should also put a fantastic word forward for Lokpal to ensure that corruption is eradicated somewhat," Hazare said.

The two-day Core Committee, chaired Hazare, comes soon after the activist's day-long fast to protest against the "watered-down" directory Lokpal Bill through the Parliamentary Standing Committee.

The Core Committee can also be prone to discuss how to just do it using campaign within the five poll-bound state if situation warrants.

Sources said the Core Committee will likely deliberate around the mode of Ramlila agitation like whether Hazare should lay on a fast you aren't and the way to mobilise support for the protest, which will be held during the height of winter.

There are also concerns about Hazare's health insurance every one of these factors will probably be considered while seeking the protest mode, sources said.

Hazare has increased attack on government on the issue bringing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on direct line of fire, saying the first kind won't take any decision and the latter watering around the proposals.

Congress has been insisting that Hazare should wait until Parliament passes into your market before going on a protest.

The cabinet, with a meeting chaired by Pm Manmohan Singh, on Tuesday approved the Judicial Standards and Accountability Bill, the Grievances Redressal Bill along with the Whistleblowers' Bill.

The Grievances Redress Bill, 2011, seeks to check on graft in lower levels of administration and set standards for time-bound public service and grievance redressal from panchayats to government departments.

These bills were cleared at the same time Hazare has demanded that grievance redressal needs to be the main Lokpal bill along with the judiciary should also be created the ambit in the anti-graft ombudsman.

School 'asks' 840 students to buy iPads

We moved from blackboards to interactive boards and beyond this concept to laptops and today, it is the iPad2.
- Vandana Lulla, Director, Podar International School

If you are unaware of the latest news make sure you go through Breaking News and Hot News.

The us government could be patting itself on the back for creating earth's cheapest, Android-based tablet Aakash at only Rs. 3,000, but the homegrown gizmo is clearly not the Apple on this posh city school's eye.

The guts and school education at Podar International School in Santacruz seems willing to integrate Steve Jobs' legacy in daily learning. In a very recent circular dated December 9, the school management informed parents which it will quickly introduce iPad2 in classrooms in the next academic year. While some parents welcomed the move, others notice the fancy tablet just isn't simple for children.

The next edition in the iPad, which costs Rs. 40,000, has introduced for that 840 students of normal VI to XII. But, says director and principal with the school Vandana Lulla, these days isn't mandatory. The school's circular, however, mentions no alternative for moms and dads who will be not entirely in love with the idea, activists point out (see box).

The circular states, "We are satisfied to announce how the decision taken with the school treatments for using Apple iPad2 inside the classroom by the students has become welcomed by the parent community. Parents have a choice of either purchasing the iPad2 from the school with an outright basis or acquire a finance scheme available. In addition, you should indicate when the iPad2 will likely be purchased by for your own. You happen to be requested to mark your choice... to take further steps to initiate the task and negotiate most order purchase."

But officials asserted wards of parents who do not desire to purchase it might have the option for learning on interactive boards that may carry on being used as soon as the iPads are introduced. Those involved with favour of the idea can find it with an EMI of Rs. 1,400 or by themselves.

iDoubt
Some parents have their own reservations regarding the concept. K Mahesh (name changed), a parent or gaurdian of a pupil at Podar School, said, "I was obviously a student once and i also know what education is. If you alter the syllabus, that's digestible. In case you alter the device with a few weird logic, it can be problematic. I would like my kid to adhere to the present method of education that millions with this country are following, and setting a benchmark for other people. I am not from the usage of iPad. However i don' believe it is practical for my kid."

Another parent, Sushma Shah (name changed), said, "I work with an iPad and that i understand how difficult it is to take care of."

Others argue the opposite. Tannu Kewalramani, PTA chairperson, Podar International School, said, "In a conference recently, i was given a glimpse of the way the iPad2 works and student reviews on it were mostly favourable. Introducing this is a good concept and a most parents are positioned because of it.

"When we use modern technology for household chores, why not use it in education? Because it is, students tend to be more knowledgeable about gadgets than we're."

Principal speaks
Lulla said, "After observing how gadget-savvy students are becoming and exactly how they may be acquainted with iPads, I took the initiative flying insects the iPad2. It may help students to retain the content. They can download numerous textbooks while they want. Further, a research by a laptop manufacturing company figured that more using technology has improved the performance of students in subjects like Biology, Chemistry, History, and Earth Science."

But why the iPad? "Because of two reasons. One, we have a parent employed by Apple and, two, the iPad2 has the best applications," Lulla said. "We moved from blackboards to interactive boards and from there to laptops and now, it is the iPad2."

She continued, "The games application is going to be blocked in class every time a child enters with the iPad2. After we took careful analysis bring in the iPad2 earlier this year, we provided training to everyone our teachers, including me."

Acknowledging a people are not not in favour, Lulla said, "There are only 5-10 per cent of parents that don't want the iPad2. It is not mandatory and kids of parents who don't buy it can learn from interactive boards."

Expert says
Jayant Jain, president of Forum For Fairness in Education and many types of India Federation of Parent Teacher Association, said, "If the institution is indeed keen to herald technology, parents must be given an option to acquire any company's tablet. But nowhere did the circular mention this. Nor achieved it claim that parents who don't would like to buy their son or daughter an iPad2 could study from interactive boards. What this means is that it must be mandatory for all. Also, parents should bear the fee if your child drops and damages the expensive gadget. They may be in the learning process, why can't they be given cheaper tablets which may be updated by the school."
